FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Here are some questions that are frequently asked by parents, together with the answers from school.
Q: My child does not tell me what he/she is doing at school but I am interested to know, how can I find out?
A: The staff are always available on the playground for an informal chat just before and after school. There is also a weekly newsletter and half term diary planner to keep parents informed.

Q: I want to help support my child in their education how can I do this?
A: Speak to their class teacher with your concerns and they will be able to help you.

Q: How/when do I get updated on my child’s progress?
A: Parents’ consultation evenings are held during the autumn and spring terms with a formal school report at the end of the academic year. However, you can always speak to the class teacher who will be happy to help.

Q: I’m confused about the school years as people seem to call them different things. Is it Reception class or FY1?
A: Reception class at St Joseph’s is called ‘Foundation Year’ (FY) all classes from then on are Year 1, Year 2, etc.

Q: What is Key Stage?
A: Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are the old Infants and Juniors. Key Stage 1 is Years 1 and 2. Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 through to 6.

Q: When is the school’s Open Day and how can I attend?
A: There is an official Open Day held in the autumn term, this is advertised in newsletters, parish bulletins, this website, etc. However, prospective parents are always welcome to ring school and book a time to view the school.

Q: How much are school dinners?
A: At the moment (Sept 2017) they are (£2.35 per day) £11.75 per week payable online each week.

Q: My son/daughter has special dietary requirements, how does the school cater for this?
A: Parents of any child with a diagnosed medical condition eg. nut allergy, must have contact school and through the school Nurse a medical care plan will be created to cater for their needs.

Q: What’s the school’s policy on bullying?
A: Certain policies can be found in the Policies and Forms section of this website.

Q: I want to ask the teacher some questions but don’t feel there’s a good time to approach them, what should I do?
A: The staff are always available on the playground for an informal chat just before and after school. If this time is unsuitable, parents are asked to contact the school office to book a more mutually convenient time.
Q: My child has just started school but won’t tell me anything about their day or what they ate for lunch. I’m worried about him/her, what should I do?
A: It is quite normal for FY children to respond to every question asked by parents with ‘nothing’ as they’ve had enough of school for the day and want to play at home. However, staff are always available as mentioned above. Please rest assured that if there was a problem we would contact you first!

Q: I’m worried that my son/daughter is not making friends, should I be worried?
A: See above.
Q: How can I make payments to school for dinners, trips, PTA events etc?
A: All parents are asked to sign up to ‘Parent Pay’ All payments can be made online at the parents convenience.

Q: Does the school have a pre-school nursery?
A: No.

Q: How will I know when the school closes due unforeseen circumstances i.e. snow, heating problems?
A: We have a parent mail system, speak to the office staff if you require more information.

Q: I want to become part of the PTA how can I get involved?
A: Ask any member of staff who will direct you to the appropriate PTA members for more information.

Q: Can siblings be included in school photos and do I book an appointment?
A: Yes, usually at the start of the session

Q: Late for school – how does my child get in to class?
A: All late comers must arrive through the main entrance off Little Sutton Lane and speak to the office staff who will then take your child to their classroom.
Q: What schemes of work does the school follow and where can I find information on this?
A: Parents are asked to speak to their child’s class teacher for specific questions relating to the curriculum.

Q: What happens if my child is hurt at school?
A: Basic First Aid is administered by staff who have been trained, children are given a letter to inform you of the mishap. However, we will always immediately speak directly to parents for more serious injuries.

Q: Does the school have an out of hours nursery/club as I work full-time?
A: Unfortunately, we do not have a Nursery but we do have a before and after school club. More information can be found in the Sunshine Club section of this website.
